Intensive Therapy Protocol

David Cornwell offers a structured, immersive intensive therapy process, designed for individuals seeking deep and sustained psychological change.

This intensive format is for people who recognise that weekly therapy may not be sufficient for the challenges they are facing. By working consistently and intensively over a defined period of time, therapeutic momentum can develop, allowing trauma, mood disorders, and long-standing patterns to be addressed at a depth that is often not possible in standard psychotherapeutic work.

The Protocol

The Intensive Therapy Protocol is a time-limited, structured therapeutic process designed to support deep psychological change over a concentrated period.

The protocol typically involves:

  • A three- to six-week commitment

  • Two therapy sessions per day

  • Five days per week, with weekends free for rest and integration

  • A consistent daily structure that supports continuity and depth

  • The emphasis of the protocol is on sustained therapeutic momentum, while allowing sufficient space for reflection and integration.

Structure of the Day

Morning Session

The morning session begins with a short mindfulness-based practice to support grounding, presence, and nervous system regulation. This is followed by psychotherapy, with an emphasis on embodied and relational work. The session focuses on orientation, reflection, emotional processing, and the integration of psychological insight.

Afternoon Session

The afternoon session is more specifically trauma-focused and draws on Somatic Experiencing and EMDR. This session supports the processing of traumatic memories, nervous system patterns, and embodied responses that continue to influence mood, behaviour, and relationships.

Between-Session Support

Alongside the formal therapy sessions, clients are encouraged to engage in self-discipline and supportive routines that can help consolidate the therapeutic work.

This may include:

  • Regular movement or exercise, such as going to the gym

  • Engagement with complementary therapeutic or body-based approaches, where appropriate

  • Reflective or therapeutic tasks between sessions

Where helpful, guidance and support can be offered in identifying practices that best support the therapeutic process.

Therapeutic Approaches

The intensive process integrates several complementary approaches:

Embodied Psychotherapy
This approach recognises that psychological distress is held not only in thoughts and beliefs, but also in the body. Attention is given to sensation, posture, breath, and emotional expression, allowing implicit patterns to become conscious and available for change.

Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing is a trauma-informed approach that works directly with the nervous system. Rather than revisiting traumatic events in detail, the focus is on restoring regulation, resilience, and capacity through careful attention to bodily experience.

EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based trauma therapy that supports the reprocessing of distressing memories so they can be integrated without remaining emotionally overwhelming.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness practices are used throughout the process to support awareness, stability, and self-regulation, helping clients develop a different relationship to thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations.

Clinical Background

David Cornwell is a UKCP-registered psychotherapist with over twenty years’ experience working in the fields of addiction,  trauma, embodiment, mindfulness, and psychological change.

He has trained extensively in mindfulness-based and body-centred psychotherapy, including postgraduate training at University of Oxford in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. He holds two postgraduate degrees in mindfulness-based psychotherapy, which inform the integration of mindfulness, embodiment, and trauma-informed work within the intensive therapy protocol.

David has also worked as part of an integrative clinical team at The Balance Rehab Clinic, supporting individuals with addiction and complex mental health presentations.

His work draws on a combination of embodied psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, and mindfulness-based approaches, delivered within a careful, ethical, and relational framework.

Duration and Commitment

A commitment of three weeks is recommended for the intensive therapy process to take hold. Many clients choose to extend the work to six weeks, allowing for deeper processing, consolidation, and integration.

The structure of the work can also evolve over time. For example:

  • An initial period of daily intensive work

  • Followed by a gradual tapering of session frequency as the work stabilises

Following the intensive phase, many clients choose to continue with ongoing therapeutic support, often at a reduced frequency, such as one or two sessions per week, which may take place online. This longer-term maintenance phase can support deeper integration of the work, help new patterns take hold, and provide continuity as changes are consolidated into everyday life.

This extended support is often particularly beneficial for individuals working with addiction, depression, or long-standing mood difficulties, where ongoing therapeutic contact can support stabilisation, reduce relapse risk, and sustain meaningful psychological transformation over time.

Fees and Location

The Intensive Therapy Protocol is structured around 10-session blocks.

  • €3,000 per 10 sessions

  • A standard intensive week consists of 10 sessions (two sessions per day, five days per week)

  • Longer intensives are arranged as consecutive 10-session blocks

Location of the Work

The Intensive Therapy Protocol is ordinarily delivered in Palma de Mallorca.

If you live in Mallorca, and subject to availability and clinical suitability, there may also be the option for sessions to take place in your home. Where sessions are delivered outside the usual setting, travel costs are added to the session fees.

In some cases, and depending on availability and practical considerations, it may be possible for David to travel to deliver the intensive therapy protocol at a client’s home, either in Mallorca or internationally. These arrangements are considered on a case-by-case basis and are dependent on feasibility, timing, and professional commitments.

If you are interested in exploring how and where the intensive therapy protocol might be delivered, please make contact. Where possible, the structure and location of the work can be discussed to determine whether a suitable arrangement can be found.
