Intensive Therapy in Mallorca

David Cornwell offers a structured, immersive intensive therapy process from his office in Palma de Mallorca, available to both residents of the island and visitors travelling to Mallorca for focused therapeutic work.

This intensive format is designed for individuals seeking deep, sustained change where weekly therapy may not be sufficient. By working consistently over a concentrated period of time, therapeutic momentum can develop, allowing patterns to be explored and integrated at a depth that is often not possible in standard outpatient therapy.

The Intensive Therapy Protocol

The intensive therapy process involves two sessions per day, typically over five days per week.

Morning Session

The morning session begins with a short mindfulness-based practice to support grounding, presence, and nervous system regulation. This is followed by embodied psychotherapy, where emotional experience, relational patterns, and meaning-making are explored with attention to both psychological and bodily experience.

This session supports reflection, integration, and the development of insight, while remaining anchored in present-moment awareness.

Afternoon Session

The afternoon session is more structured and trauma-focused, drawing primarily on EMDR and somatic trauma therapy. This session supports the processing of traumatic memories, emotional imprints, and nervous system patterns that continue to influence mood, behaviour, and relationships.

Together, the two daily sessions allow work to unfold in a way that is both deep and carefully contained.

Therapeutic Approaches

The intensive process integrates several complementary approaches:

Embodied Psychotherapy

Embodied psychotherapy recognises that psychological distress is not held only in thoughts and beliefs, but also in the body. Attention is given to posture, sensation, movement, breath, and emotional expression, allowing implicit patterns to become conscious and available for change. This approach supports integration rather than purely cognitive insight.

Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing is a trauma-informed approach that works directly with the nervous system. Rather than reliving traumatic events, the focus is on gently tracking bodily sensations and restoring the system’s capacity to regulate, settle, and respond flexibly. This can be particularly helpful for developmental trauma, chronic stress, and symptoms such as anxiety, shutdown, or overwhelm.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based trauma therapy that supports the reprocessing of distressing memories and experiences. By working with bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps reduce the emotional charge of traumatic material and allows memories to be integrated in a way that no longer feels intrusive or overwhelming.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness practices are used throughout the process to support awareness, stability, and self-regulation. These practices help clients develop a different relationship to thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations, fostering greater choice, resilience, and self-compassion.

Duration and Structure

A minimum commitment of three weeks is recommended in order for the process to take hold. However, the effectiveness of the work increases significantly when the intensive is extended.

  • Three weeks can initiate meaningful change

  • Six weeks or more often allows for deeper, more stable, and longer-lasting transformation

The process can also be gradually tapered. For example:

  • Weeks 1–3: two sessions per day, five days per week

  • Weeks 4 and beyond: reduced session frequency, depending on clinical needs and progress

Each intensive is shaped collaboratively and adjusted as the work unfolds.
